It seems that everyone you meet has a website today. Plumbers, electricians, moving companies, dentists, doctors, etc. – everyone has a website. People like to do their research before they contact a business and that is why they will often search before they call. This helps them get comfortable with you and so they know what to expect when they pick up the phone to call you.

The problem:  For most small local businesses, nobody can usually find their website. Most local businesses simply do not rank for even the least competitive keywords. Why? Most times the website has very poor setup and even worse keyword selection. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen a local mortgage company that is trying to rank for the word ‘mortgage’ or at least that is what their title tags indicate.

Here are some common errors that I have seen with local businesses.

1. Same title for every single page on the site – make sure every title is unique.  This is what goes in between the <title> and </title> tags.

2. Choose a targeted set of 2-3 keywords for each page.  If you are a florist in Neptune, NJ, then make your homepage title something like Neptune Florist – Florist in Neptune, NJ 07753.  Don’t make it Florist – Buy flowers here.

3. Less graphics and Flash and more text.  Search engines like text.  Give them what they like and it will help you rank better. Have at least 5-10 (20 is better) pages of content on your site.  And update it to keep your site fresh.

4. Build a few links to your site through targeted local directories and the chamber of commerce.  Start a small blog about your industry on your own domain or use a free service like blogger.com, wordpress.com, or twitter.com

5. Take action and don’t hope Google will rank you just because you have a website.  You need to promote your site (or have a local seo do it for you)!

These are just a few simple tips that can help you get your website to rank a little better.  These small steps won’t perform any miracles, but don’t discount them – they are powerful if you follow them closely.
